Clarissa’s Story – 2023 Holiday Campaign
The holiday season, marked by a time of rest, wonder and joy, can sometimes look different in your neighbours’ homes. For families with children and youth with physical, communication and developmental needs, it can be a time when daily challenges seem harder to manage because of the winter cold and shorter days. Bring warmth to the homes of children and youth and their families in our community to help live life at their full potential.
Clarissa is 4 years old and lives with her parents, Megan and Zach, and her newborn sister Senna. At 3 months old, a Sick Kids Hospital visit was prompted by continuous eye-rolling. At Sick Kids Hospital, they were told that Clarissa had suffered a stroke around the time of birth that caused the development of a fluid-filled cavity, called a cyst, in her frontal left lobe. She was diagnosed with a rare disorder called Porencephaly, and secondary diagnoses of Hydrocephalus, Epilepsy, and Right-Sided Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy. Megan and Zach began to wonder what Clarissa’s quality of life and future would now look like. As first-time parents, their expectations were suddenly and drastically altered as her diagnoses affected her daily living. She would now need a team of medical experts, seizure medication, and therapy to learn to walk and use the right side of her body.
A referral to Grandview Kids for community support was made, and it has since made a world of difference in Clarissa’s life. The milestones naturally met by most children did not come easy, but with the help of Grandview Kids, her parents are able to persevere. Her Developmental Paediatrician offered medical care and resources for support. Speech-Language Pathology helped her ability to communicate. Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy directed them with equipment, stretches and exercises needed to overcome gross motor and fine motor skill delays. With the countless appointments Clarissa has, having specialized services close to home is vital to efficiently manage their time, home-life and Clarissa’s medical care. Through Grandview Kids’ early intervention, Megan and Zach were given the necessary tools that led to Clarissa’s success. They still need to put in hard work, but they know that Grandview Kids will be with them every step of the way.
Clarissa’s family shares their story as a way to give back to Grandview Kids. You can never repay a priceless gift, but you can try to share that gift with others.
The journey begins at a young age but doesn’t stop once a child starts walking. The hurdles that must be overcome through the different stages of life remain – from infancy to early school years to adolescence –but now they can be faced with strength and courage.
Donations to Grandview Kids Foundation reach into the homes of not only children and youth in our community, but to entire families just like Clarissa’s. Your help gives hope to families who once thought their journey would be isolated and lonely. Now you are giving them a community of support through Grandview Kids who follow their journey from the beginning and well into the future. You are shaping the success of children and youth who will eventually be young adults participating in our community.
Spark hope and fan the flame for a brighter tomorrow by giving generously to Grandview Kids Foundation. Your donation reaches into homes of children and youth with physical, communication and developmental needs.

Family Fund Day in support of Grandview Kids was an incredible day of family, friends and fundraising
What does it take to organize a successful fundraiser? Passion for what you are fundraising for
This inaugural Family Fund Day was organized to help raise funds for both Grandview Kids and the MS Society of Canada. The organizers were passionate about raising funds for each organization because of how inspired they were by the services, people and help they received.
One of the organizers is a Grandview Kids mom, and her daughter’s name is Mya, who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and has been receiving Grandview Kids services such as physiotherapy and speech therapy. Her mom says, “Grandview Kids has helped Mya so much; she is their number one fan, so we were so inspired by the incredible help we received that we wanted to create a fundraiser to support all the life-changing work they do.”
When we have passion for a cause, anything is possible.
All this passion and inspiration is what led Mya’s mom, her aunt (who has MS), and other family and friends to create this fundraiser. In addition, the fundraiser was meant to highlight and support women and children of colour who experience chronic illness and disability in a fun way. It was a sunshine-filled day for families and children to enjoy bouncy castles, balloons, music, face painting, games, a DJ, cotton candy, and amazing food by Ebony Bites food truck featuring unique and great-tasting Caribbean food.
Mya’s dad got involved, too, helping with the location of the fundraiser being held at his gym, Apex Gym. There were so many wonderful people who attended this event in Ajax, and we can’t wait for next year’s event!

Forever a Friend: Jerry Coughlan’s Incredible Contributions Will Never be Forgotten
“With Jerry as a friend, we gained a future filled with possibilities for Grandview Kids and the families we serve.”
— Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann, CEO, Grandview Kids
A bright light has just gone out in Durham Region. Jerry Coughlan, hard-working businessman and selfless philanthropist, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, February 24th, 2021. The generosity that Jerry showed throughout his life has helped him create an enormous legacy that will have a lasting impact.
Grandview Kids staff and families are heartbroken by the loss of this wonderful man, whose generous spirit helped to make a difference in the lives of so many Grandview Kids and their families.
Growing up in a working-class family with 10 siblings, Jerry spent his entire life working his way up. As the founder of Coughlan Homes, Jerry helped to build thousands of beautiful homes in our region and also went on to share his success by supporting many charitable organizations in his community, including Grandview Kids.
In 2017, Jerry made a $5 million donation to our Believe Campaign to help build and support the “New Grandview”. Jerry’s inspiring contribution is helping Grandview Kids create a new centre of excellence for kids in Durham Region with physical, communication and developmental needs. We will forever honour his contribution by naming our new building after him.
“At Grandview Kids, Jerry will always be first and foremost remembered as a friend,” says Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann, CEO. “He helped us to create a bold vision of how to build a facility that would provide an experience and a place of hope, discovery, belonging and celebration for all kids. We gained a deep admiration and respect for a man who believed in community. We gained a forever friend.”
Our deepest condolences go out to Jerry’s family during this difficult time, including his wife, Lyn, her two children, and his five children, 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. His memory will live on in our hearts forever.
