Building a legacy – Honouring Jerry Coughlan
Jerry Coughlan was a man of wisdom, hope and humility. A dedicated and hardworking individual, Jerry knew that success never came without determination. For years, he poured his heart and soul into his business endeavours. Through his relentless efforts, he eventually found the opportunity to turn his attention to the needs of his community. This journey led Jerry to Grandview Kids.
As Jerry walked the halls of Grandview Kids’ original Oshawa headquarters on Townline Road South, he saw beyond the small rooms and colourful murals. He recognized the remarkable dedication and passion of the clinicians, therapists and staff, who consistently went above and beyond. While the environment was cozy and familiar, it was the unwavering commitment and compassion that truly defined Grandview Kids. These visits left a lasting impression on Jerry, fostering a deep connection with the organization.
Jerry intimately understood the desire to provide the best opportunities for children and youth to reach their full potential. He was driven by a commitment to ensure that parents and caregivers across Durham Region had access to the same resources. Quietly observing, Jerry noticed the many children and youth with physical, communication and developmental needs, and through his community work, he touched countless lives. Although Jerry never sought recognition or saw himself as extraordinary, he was a visionary. In his own words, he was committed to “doing what was right and doing it well.”
Jerry’s generous and heartfelt contributions to the Grandview Kids Foundation have supported countless initiatives. Most notably, his significant gift to the Foundation’s Believe Campaign made possible the construction of Grandview Kids – The Jerry Coughlan Building. Through his ongoing relationship with Grandview Kids, Jerry’s impact has been felt in more ways than one, helping bring to life the dreams and aspirations of so many.
Thanks to a final gift from Jerry, Grandview Kids is now able to purchase specialized equipment that enhances its programs and services. In addition, his gift has brought Grandview Kids even closer to launching a family support fund in the future. While not yet available, this fund will provide families with even more resources and care beyond existing programs and services when it’s introduced.
Jerry’s legacy is one of humility, kindness and generosity. His gentle spirit recognized the power of extending a helping hand whenever possible. Through his words, his perseverance in the face of personal challenges and his unwavering loyalty to the communities he served, Jerry continues to remind us of the profound influence one person can have on countless lives.
